After losing her mum to ovarian cancer, Jodie held a garden party for family and friends.
My mum Sonia passed away in December 2015 after a short and dignified battle with ovarian cancer. She was a lovely lady, who left behind five children and seven grandchildren. She was the heart of our family and we miss her very much. Looking back now, she had a lot of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, but we were not aware of these at the time. She had quite a bloated belly which we assumed was a food intolerance or just an upset tummy.
After Mum passed away I really struggled and needed to keep busy. Nothing prepares you for losing your mum. I wanted to do something positive and decided to fundraise for Target Ovarian Cancer and raise awareness of this condition.
My mum loved a cuppa and her favourite place was her beloved garden. She loved gardening and making sure the birds were fed. I wanted to celebrate Mum's life and have a positive day, so I decided to do a tea party in her garden. Alongside that I did a raffle and was lucky enough to get some really fab prizes including afternoon tea at a London hotel and signed books from both Fearne Cotton and Nigella Lawson. I was amazed by the generosity of people!
We had the most wonderful time. It was a beautiful day and the sun was shining. We had tea, cake and scones a plenty as well as a cuddly toy raffle for the children. I was so touched by the amount of people who turned up. There was so much laughter and smiles.
In the end I raised over £1,300, and hopefully educated a lot more people about this condition on the day. The money raised was enough to help over 2,600 people learn about the symptoms to improve early diagnosis and allow 1,300 GPs to update their knowledge on best practice for early diagnosis.
Since then I have also ran the Silverstone Half Marathon and did a cake sale as part of an open day at work. I really feel that we all need to educate ourselves on the symptoms of ovarian cancer and talk about the condition. Early diagnosis is the key.
With your support this summer, more women will get the early diagnosis and care they need.
