This is difficult because you have to feel confident. Talking about sex can be quite a sensitive issue for a lot of people, men and women alike. When you want to talk about sex or lack of it or fear of it, physical or emotional, I think it helps if you’ve got a healthcare professional that you’ve got a comfortable relationship with – if you can talk to them, ask them. I would hope that you’d come to your clinical nurse specialist.

We’re doing an educational programme for nurse specialists at the moment so that they feel comfortable in answering these questions, introducing a Macmillan idea called the holistic needs assessment, where we should be asking you how you’re feeling about everything, including sex. You’ll also find that there’s often somebody in the area who will do psychosexual counselling, so ask if there is anywhere that you can be referred.
