One of the best parts of our Being Together events is listening to women share their experiences of ovarian cancer. It’s a privilege to hear so many personal stories and we’re often told how valuable and reassuring these open conversations are for women who meet others in similar circumstances. We also often hear how empowering it is for the women who share their experiences to know that it will help others.
Karen was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in October 2016 and came to our Being Together event in Edinburgh in September. Together we made a film so that she could share her positive message and how important it is for her to get up each morning with a smile on her face.
Hello, my name is Karen. I am 50 years old and I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last October. I recently went to a Being Together event in Edinburgh and I would encourage every woman to go to these events if you can. I met so many lovely women – women in the same situation as myself. That was the best part for me: it was nice to speak to so many women in the same position. Before, I didn’t know anyone in my area who had ovarian cancer.
On the morning of the event I did a bit of filming about my experience. I didn’t feel nervous at all! The staff at Target Ovarian Cancer are all so lovely and put me at ease right away. I would encourage all women who want to share their story to go for it – it’s just a nice thing to do!
These Being Together days are a great way of chatting and getting to know people. You can share stories and listen to others. We are all strong women who should celebrate who we are and what we’ve come through – let’s get behind each other and encourage one another.
